Post - Modernism

Post – modernism represents a number of trends or movements in the literature and arts that were developing in 1970, that had at its core a rejection of the principles and practices of the established modernism. This also had more focus on architecture and the decorative arts, going against the influence and practice of the International Style and stimulating the use of more elements from historical ordinary styles and jesting illusions, decoration and complexity.

One of the key ideas in the post – modern era was Deconstruction. This key concept was characterized by ideas of fragmentation, manipulating the ideas of a structure`s surface or skin. It stands on the basis that by taking away something from its original intention we can understand it better and even appreciate it for what it is, rather than what we would think that we would like it to be.

In the field of typography, one character that stood out and made use of this idea was Wolfgang Weingart. He really did not enjoy the International Style emphasis on strict objectivity, understanding and cleanliness. Therefore he started to take a different approach to typography, which resulted in some incredible works.

One designer who took advantage of the technological breakthrough of the respective years was April Greiman, a student of Wolfgang Weingart. Taking advantage of the Macintosh, she established herself as a pioneer of digital communication design. She used the idea of deconstruction to great effect, applying what she learned from her teacher and getting out works that could be understood by each person.

This key principle of the Post – Modernism era is still present today, but it is still hard to spot since it can be confused with futuristic artwork. Although its peak period has gone, the concept of deconstruction is still not lost, as numerous artist wants us to remember that everyday objects are more than what we see and that we should take a moment to analyse them more and more each day, as we could be surprised. This idea, that brought works of art, that seems out of the ordinary, still keeps on doing that same thing, as the following works, do seem to make you think where the future is really going. Is it back in time? Is it present? Or is it the future?

The idea of Deconstruction is present in the current architecture, such as Frank Gehry house, which he designed for himself or the entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris or the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas.

Other fields that use this idea is the furniture field, which makes sure that the core basis of the furniture is the main attraction.

Everyday technological objects can become an art in themselves, by using the key concept of deconstruction.

Some modern artists that still use this idea are Oleksandra Barysheva and Andrea Myers.

The concept is still being maintained in typography today.
